T1 Day 4: SA Set Another History Seeking Target after Aus Crumble

South Africa’s bowlers, and Jacques Kallis in particular, caused a major Australian downslide on the morning of day four of the first Test at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. However, given the deficit, South Africa are once again staring at history if they are to pull off an unlikely victory.

Kallis drove away hope Ricky Ponting’s options of deciding when to declare by picking up two wickets, Ponting and Michael Hussey, in two balls and then, hanging on to two good chances as Australia lost their nine wickets for a little over hundred runs to be all out for 207.

Phillip Hughes survived a missed chance when South Africa did not ask for a review yesterday and went onto to make an unconvincing seventy-five. Eight wickets fell in a heap with the addition of seventy-five runs. And it was the last wicket pair of Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle that stretched the target to 454.

Skipper Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie negotiated the period between lunch and tea to take South Africa to fifty-six for no loss. But the hosts still need 397 runs or bat out four sessions after tea today to deny Australia an opportunity to put a foot in the door to South Africa taking the number one crown. It’s not going to be easy, for either!
