Even as the Zimbabwe tri series gets underway with India taking on Zimbabwe in the first match, one could not but help recall the last time India toured Zimbabwe with drastically different media spotlight.

The present series sees Suresh Raina captain the Indian team even as Mahendra Singh Dhoni is rested. While some are stirring up conversation by claiming Raina's enterprising innings as captain could knock Dhoni off, the reality is that this series is decidedly less profile which is why stories are being stirred up in the first place.
The 2005 India's tour of Zimbabwe saw a very different experience with the then Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly, and the then Indian coach, Australian Greg Chappell, pose with a fake composure by a pool table only to unravel by the time the tour ended.
Chappell reported told Ganguly his time was up and asked him to make way. Ganguly was not only a key batsman but also, the captain, and took this as an outright insult. As time progressed, Chappell emerged as the villain of Indian cricket and after the 2007 ICC World Cup that ended disastrously in the Caribbean, Chappell resigned before word had it confirmed that he would have been fired.
Ganguly batted on and on during the Test match as if to prove a point to Chappell, but by then, it was beyond doubt that things were not well in the Indian team would be an understatement. Zimbabwe cricket has also unravelled for multiple reasons since which is why this tri series is being encouraged.
