Through the rough and tough grind, the very many shades of Ricky Ponting, the Australian skipper, have surfaced. Here is a witty take on some of his many moods. (Kudos to the ace photographers who have made this an exciting experience!)
The Australians seem to be plotting: “Okay guys, no Symonds here. So, we have to do it without him.”
Ponting’s thinking: “I hope I am not looking too foolish. I hope I managed to fool them...my team’s not good and I know it.”
Ponting to Kumble: “You too, huh? Yes, looks like they are plotting to strip me of my captaincy as well in the pavilion!”
On Sachin’s landmark: “Must remember to call up Gilly on this; he’ll know what to do.”
Ponting to Cameron White: “Can we please get this right together for once now?”
“can’t see eye to eye, mate. It’s hopeless.” (Doesn’t matter who’s saying it to whom)
Is Michael Clarke showing Ponting the door?
“Now if only this were a crystal ball...”
“Help me, God. I’m feeling caged!”
“Damn, Gilly’s tactics didn’t work. Symonds...wish you were here!”
“Come on, guys, catch this one. Aren’t we all on the same side?”
“It’s not looking pretty, What do you think the stars are telling us?”
Ponting to Clarke: “Oh, you’re just a pup. Don’t you worry. I have called Gilly... (hehe)”
In Happier Times! Now Ponting’s thinking, “Greg’s wasting my time”
“It’s lonely at the top...and at the bottom.”
“Mirror, mirror on the wall, do I need to call Warne for hair replacement after this tour?”
“My luck continues...no one’s turned up to even watch!...one innings changes nothing... (Greg’s wasting my time...again!)”
Ponting to Yuvraj: “Not a word about what happened down under and I will put in a good word for you with Anil.”
On his haunches, Ponting says: “I cannot turn around and face it. I am done for.”
Ponting is thinking: “I fooled them into thinking I have taken up yoga. may be I should change my religion.”
Taking up rifle shooting or who’s really leading the way?
“This is a better fielding position. Bat on, Gambhir”
“Tried Lee, Clark, Johnson...even Watson...White, Clarke, Katich...anyone in the crowd wants to bowl to Gambhir?”
Another “duh!” moment : “It’s getting out of hand!”
“we’re getting too old for this game, boys!”
Ponting : “I’m telling Pup to keep his hair short. Else he will lose it. ”
Look at the guy next to Ponting: “May be I should take his advice as well. He doesn’t know what he has got himself into against India but what he says about the hair bit must be true. Look at him, poor bloke...must advice him to call Warne”
“I need to sit down and think” (Duh!)
“Change of Career perhaps?”

Accept it or don’t, Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting is one of the greatest all time batsmen the game of cricket has ever seen. He is a true champ in both the formats of the game and his captaincy record is unrivaled in the game’s history.
Ricky Ponting may be a great sportsman but a very bad sports ambassador. A players duty is not just to play and play for win at any cost but to spread sportsmanship and the message of love across borders. Ponting doesn’t know that.
Whether you love or hate Ponting, he will remain as one of the finest players and greatest cricket champions of all times. The Australian cricket team has won every championship in the world under him save the Twenty20 World Cup. He has an awesome Test and ODI batting record with a Test average unmatched by even the great Tendulkar.
Indeed Ricky Ponting cannot be undermined. But rather than always look at the ugly side of sport, there also happens to be room for humour. All in a light vein.
