Twenty20 match Replaces 50 Over Decider?

This is the problem when adapting rain affected games. The logic is baffling and that it even has an official status is ridiculous.

The fifth and final match of the Chappell Hadlee Trophy was also the deciding match of the series with hosts Australia and New Zealand tied at two matches apiece.

However, the morning at the Gabba in Brisbane was marked by heavy showers that delayed the match so long, that it was not nearly till the cut off time when the match could be called off that the match eventually got underway.

But this beats logic. The basis for the series is the limited overs of the game. If no reserve day for maintained as part of the itinerary, the trophy should have been shared by both teams and the matters put to rest.

Even if a Twenty20 match had to be played to appease the crowds, it could have been mutually decided between teams and term it unofficial practice for Sunday. That the skills and temperament required for the different formats is different is obvious, then how one can be a substitute for another is something that needs to be given some logical thought, if anyone in the ICC cricket committee cares to ponder over.

Ridiculously now a 50 over game is now being reduced to essentially a Twenty20 game, with both teams reduced to playing 22 overs apiece. There is already a different discipline to just that kind of game, with the one off Twenty20 match scheduled for Sunday. Why then must a 50 over series be reduced to a charade and worse still, an important series decided not in the format it was devised for?
