Umpire Darrell Hair Says Politics, Not Players, Behind 2006 Oval Test Fiasco

The 2006 Oval Test refused to simply die down. Umpire Darrell Hair who officiated in the match is now training his guns on the politics that went on that led the Pakistan team to stay put in their dressing room.

Pakistan were playing England at the Oval on the fourth day when after the tea session, the Pakistan captain, Inzamam ul Haq, and his troops refused to leave the dressing room. The drama followed the aftermath when Pakistan were accused of ball tampering.

Hair is led to believe that while the players continued on even though they were accused, once they returned to the dressing room, they were advised by those who wanted to politicize the issue and therefore, refused to come out, forcing Hair's hand to declare the match as forfeited by Pakistan in favour of England.

Thereafter, the ICC has overruled Hair only to backtrack on the result of the Test match after the MCC intervened.

When questioned if the decision was made solely by him and that the other umpire, Billy Doctrove, did not officiate in the match, Hair is supposed to have answered that he did not "frogmarch Billy around."
