Victoria and Aaron Finch in Trouble over Ball Tampering in Australia's Domestic Cricket

First it was Victoria that was feeling the heat of the charges. However, instead of the team, now it is one player who will pay the price for the ignominy.

The Victorian team was charged with ball tampering allegations after the umpires declared that damage had been done to the ball in the match against South Australia in the domestic Sheffield Shield match.

Even as Victoria went on to register a facile win, the charges against the entire team sullied the taste. And with Australia finding themselves in the headlines for the wrong reasons at a time when the Australian cricket team beat England in the race for the Ashes, the humiliation could not be avoided.

However, the team has been exonerated as a whole. That though does not mean that the charges were false. On the contrary, the accountability for the misdeed has fallen on the shoulders of Aaron Finch, who some may remember from his playing for the Victoria Bushrangers in the Champions League Twenty20.

Finch was held most probably culpable of the guilt and he pleaded so as well, thereby leaving Victoria without the overall taint but tainted enough through one of their own.

It may be recalled that Shahid Afridi was deemed guilty of ball tampering on Pakistan's last tour of Australia when he appeared to be biting into the ball, plausibly mistaking it for a cherry ( or not!).
