The West Indies captain for the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa, Floyd Reifer, echoed the sentiments of the new West Indies coach, David Williams, stating that the West Indies squad named for the event that the West Indies won in 2004 was not a second string team as they have been dubbed and that they were the team that would represent the passion and commitment of the Caribbean island to the game of cricket.

But Sridath Ramphal, who was the mediator in the ongoing dispute between WICB (West Indies Cricket Board) and WIPA (West Indies Players Association), has claimed that the deal was on the verge of being done before one of the parties brought forth a new set of untenable agendas, without divulging the details that brought the talks to naught.
