The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) has just started the selection process to appoint a new coach for Team India brining an end to two-month long speculation which has rumored the most likely picking and dropping of Dave Wathmore for the prestigious post.
BCCI President Sharad Pawar heads the seven-member Coach Selection Committee that will interview the two prospects, Graham Ford and John Emburey to hand over the job as the successor of Greg Chappell in the back drop of strong protest from the former Indian players on the appointment of foreigners.
The South African and present Kent coach Ford is leading the race with the unanimous choice of senior players in Team India, including skipper Rahul Dravid. He was the most successful coach of South Africa. Under his guidance, the team had won nine out the 11 series. He stepped down from his job due to the match fixing scandal in 2000. He is now associated with County team Kent.
On the other hand, the former England and Middlesex off spinner Emburey is the dark horse for the post. His name has been approved by former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar. As a player, Emburey has good records. He has 147 wickets in 64 Tests and scored 1,113 runs. Interestingly, he has not coached an International side.
