Stuart Broad, with his Man of the Match award, would have been happy to have emulated his father, Chris Broad, in helping England in the Ashes, but the glory belonged to Andrew Strauss.

Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain, surmised, "We've given our all through the series but unfortunately it hasn't been good enough. Full credit to Andrew Strauss, he's led his side well through the series...There's been countless opportunities for us throughout the series to put our stamp on the series and we haven't been able to do it."
On the Oval defeat in the fifth Test of the Ashes, Ponting stated rather euphemistically, "With us losing here I might even see if I can make it back here for one more go (in 2013 Ashes)."

Andrew Strauss, the England captain, winner of the Man of the Series award for England and also recipient of the Compton-Miller award made a few expected comments such as "This is a special moment for all of us. The players have had to dig pretty deep, it's been a very hard series."
And some unexpected ones such as, "When we were bad, we were very bad, and when we were good we managed to be good enough."
On Flintoff he stated, "Freddie's been an incredible player for England, a great advert for the game of cricket and it just won't be the same without him."

Michael Clarke, the Australian vice captain, had one statement that perhaps described best how Australia were feeling when he stated he would trade his Man of the Series for Australia award any day for a victory at the Oval that would have won Australia the Ashes.
