Younis Khan: Ode to a Dodo

Younis Khan did what he expected of any new skipper – bely the thought that captains suffer from batting issues once they become, well, captains. But it helps when the pitch has gone off to sleep rather impartially.

What does one make of a Test when the team batting first makes 644 and declares and the other team takes to batting for days three and four to make another colossal 574 for five? That’s right. The pitch is a dodo.

It is little wonder that despite the amount of runs scored in the four days thus far, there has been any real interest in this, the first Test in National Stadium, Karachi. Younis Khan helped him to 300 runs! Only the third Pakistan to do so after Hanif Mohammad and Inzamam ul Haq and only the 23rd in the history of cricket.

Even though the pitch has been laid to rest, it still requires concentration and stamina on the part of the batsmen to aim for records, and Younis had both in plenty. That he was enjoying it was apparently in the last fifty he made before touching the 300 mark.

Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss was keen to point out that only one team could win and that was Sri Lanka. But not if his two spinners, Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis, have scored centuries in the wrong column and pick up only one wicket apiece.

That there will be a result on the fifth day would be unrealistic at the way day four has ended. What has not though is Younis Khan’s and Pakistan’s innings and if they decide to bury the visitors, they may well keep on batting and let the already weary Sri Lankans get wearier still ahead of the third Test.
