The reasons behind dropping Yuvraj Singh are more tricky than those behind Tendulkar’s absence.

There was much speculation that Sachin Tendulkar was carrying a niggle and wanted to skip the 2010 Asia Cup. That he would be absent from the tournament was then confirmed when he was not named by the selectors in India’s squad of fifteen. The reason released by the BCCI was that Sachin Tendulkar had requested rest with a view to spending time with his children, a reason that seems a tad unusual coming from the maestro.
But for Yuvraj Singh, it would have been a bitter blow. While the chief of selectors loosing referred to the fitness of players as a concern, no individual reason was put forth for Yuvraj Singh’s absence from the team. Yuvraj has struggled since coming back from a wrist injury that put him out of the ODIs against South Africa and he failed to impress upon the powers that be during the 2010 ICC World Twenty20.
Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma were two of the most conspicuous players targeted following the debacle in the Caribbean for their obvious weight gain and lack of agility and runs on board. Rohit Sharma had the luxury of the Zimbabwe ODI tri series to prove he deserved to be persisted with, despite the quality of the opposition, Yuvraj Singh is having to sit this one out.
Yuvraj’s partying image has also perhaps worked against him. And once again the more serious Yuvraj Singh must emerge because when on song, he is an integral aggressor in the Indian line up. Perhaps it is time to lose their paunch and get his reputation back.
