The idea of the walk on girls ended even before it began as Essex cricket took note of the adverse reactions and canned the idea before it took shape.
Surrey cricket had to take a step backwards from their original plans to include the idea of walk on girls, also known as grid girls, after people complained about the idea as Essex cricket suggested it was with the move to add more glamour to the ongoing match. While the cheerleaders have become a side show, the further addition of glamour and what it represented was felt inappropriate by several who responded to Essex cricket’s announcement.
The walk on girls were apparently a concept the cricket match wanted to draw from the darts competition to honour some of those present at the stadium. Their idea to add some more glamour was expected to make the match more exciting even if the presence of the walk on girls on the cricket match would be of a rather small time frame. Perhaps since the cheerleaders had become part of the Twenty20 matches all round, Essex did not expect the kind of reactions that the news provoked.
With feminists questioning the logic and cricket fans in general not really seeing the point of the two minute fiasco, the idea was not allowed to see the light of day. Perhaps someone of more persuasive skills could have let the event go on as intended but with the overwhelming response being what it was, it seemed that the county had little choice.
Twenty20 has certainly brought more fans to the sport of cricket. However, Twenty20 has also rendered itself to the idea of being an entertainment version, leaving room for manipulation to add several side distractions, sometimes even letting the cricket itself be of lesser relevance. In that light, perhaps pushing forth similar ideas may have seemed like a matter of similar racing through the slip stream. But in the short space of time, the cheerleaders have gone from being a novelty to bring an addition where controversies never seem to far away.
The introduction of alien concepts such as the cheerleaders have never really sat well, particularly with the Indian sub continent. However, it was expected that there would be less protests against the idea of cheerleading girls in the foreign countries. But the final straw was reportedly the walk on girls, with the county having to take cognizance of the sentiments and abandon the idea although.
The walk on girls must now simply walk on by.
