It appears the conclusion of the IPL 2 is getting what the commencement did: excitement.
The IPL 2 did not meet with much excitement or expectations. Somehow they appeared to have been dampened since the IPL moved out of India and as rain began the second season and ominously so. Teams have not been their resplendent selves always and it had much to do with adapting to the foreign conditions. Other teams like Kolkata Knight Riders continued to be in the news for the wrong reasons and their dismal performances on the field made it even more a sorry state of affairs.
But the final league stage of the IPL 2 is adding enough drama to perhaps even compensate for the start. Close matches, last ball finishes, KKR winning against Chennai or Kings XI Punjab pulling one over the favoured Hyderabad Deccan Chargers. Even Mumbai Indians’ dismal exit from the semi final drama, even though it has been a close run in of points, keeps them an engaging prospect, like KKR did to nearly ruin Chennai’s semi final party.
Technically everyone after Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Super Kings (who are both expected to be confirmed to the semi final stage) and Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders (who are both out of the race) are vying for the final two semi final spots. It makes today’s match for the Royal Challengers Bangalore against the Daredevils interesting. Even the roaring Deccan Chargers have been tamed and their Thursday’s match against the RCB will also be important. The Kings XI Punjab are not out of the race which means their Wednesday’s match against the CSK will be most enthralling given that technically CSK should win the match to confirm their semi final spot. The Rajasthan Royals have all to prove as they continue to hover in the picture.
It’s definitely getting stingy for points at the end stage.
With five matches left in the league stage, here is how the teams stand on the points table after Game 51:
Daredevils – 18 points, 9 wins, 12 matches
Super Kings – 15 points, 7 wins, 13 matches
Deccan Chargers – 14 points, 7 wins, 13 matches
Kings XI Punjab – 14 points, 7 wins, 13 matches
Rajasthan Royals – 13 points, 6 wins, 13 matches
Royal Challengers Bangalore – 12 points, 6 wins, 12 matches
Mumbai Indians – 11 points, 5 wins, 13 matches
Knight Riders – 5 points, 2 wins, 13 matches
