Ind SL T1 Day 4 Lunch and Tea: Sri Lanka Have a Sizable Lead, Onus on India

Sri Lanka piled on the runs, as the lead grew to a record. The two Jayawardenes have held up their end of the bargain. Can India withstand the pressure?
The Motera Stadium, Ahmedabad was witness to another phenomenal day on the fourth day’s play of the morning and post lunch session. But it belonged largely to the Sri Lanka, or should one say entirely, as Sri Lanka eventually declared after lunch on 760 for seven.
En route, Mahela Jayawardene touched the 9000 Test run mark with a magnificent, virtually flawless 275 while Prasanna Jayawardene made 154 in what was only his second Test century. The duo’s partnership worth 351 beat the previous best record set by Australia’s late Sir Don Bradman and Jack Fingleton.
It also meant that Sri Lanka had a phenomenal lead of 334 runs, and it would not be easy for India to bat out the rest of the Test, even with the nature of the pitch simply because of the pressure. However, the Indian batsmen have the opportunity to redeem themselves.
But it looked difficult for India, given that Virender Sehwag chose to live life dangerously in an extreme approach of taking the positive angle. Even though India were seventy-seven for no loss at tea, the manner of Sehwag’s innings, having survived two close catch chances, still left a few question marks about whether the match is heading.
