Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag featured in the best opening partnership in a India versus Sri Lanka contest. But Sehwag’s wicket did not halt the runs that flowed at the Green Park in Kanpur on the first day of the second Test of Sri Lanka’s tour of India.
The 233 run partnership spelt trouble for the visitors as Gautam Gambhir picked up his seventh Test century even as his senior partner, Virender Sehwag, established his good form with another blazing century, his fifteenth Test century.
Sri Lanka found themselves in very different situation at lunch than they did in Ahmedabad when Chanaka Welegedera ran through the Indian top order. On this occasion, there was no respite for the Sri Lankans as the Indian duo refused to yield, batting through caution and aggression to go into lunch at 131 for no loss.
But the acceleration took on a new meaning post lunch session as India scored in excess of 170 runs, albeit that Sehwag eventually gave his wicket away for 131 scored in just 122 balls. India but India did not suffer loss in momentum as Gambhir and Rahul Dravid put together a neat partnership that was closing in on a century around tea when India were placed comfortably on 307 for the loss of one wicket.
