Kings XI Punjab kept their hopes alive by beating one of the tournament favourites, Delhi Daredevils by six wickets in Bloemfontein, in South Africa, in IPL 2,
The Kings XI Punjab are tasting mixed fortunes once again in the IPL as they need to win practically all of their matches in order to break into the four semi finalists spots. They began well, beating the Delhi Daredevils by hitting them where it hurt them hardest- their batting order. The Daredevils did not enjoy the settling in process, losing wickets regularly while runs came at a premium.
While Virender Sehwag fell to Brett Lee’s bowling, Gautam Gambhir’s run out once again emphasized just how paltry the dynamic duo’s contributions have been this year. It needed once again a rear guard effort from the middle order to salvage the day. Mithun Manhas’ twenty-six and Dinesh Karthik’s thirty-two were the only two bright notes in the scoring card that showed that the Daredevils managed to make 120.
Posed with a relatively modest target, this was the Mohali team’s best opportunity to vindicate Preity Zinta’s faith in them. Runs came from Simon Katich and captain Yuvraj Singh. But the match winning deal was signed by Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara whose forty-three put Kings XI Punjab firmly in the drivers’ seat. Irfan Pathan made twenty-one to go with his two wickets earlier in the day.
