Game 36 of the IPL 2 saw a clash between the Deccan Chargers and the Kings XI Punjab. Although the Chargers started on a rather terse footing, Andrew Symonds shone out even as Kings XI had the more clinical game.
The Hyderabad Deccan Chargers failed to get going at De Beers Diamond Oval in Kimberly. It was not until Andrew Symonds, playing his first IPL match this season, came to the crease that the Chargers developed more healthy overtones.
Symonds’ sixty off thirty-six balls and his unbeaten partnership with Venugopal Rao who made thirty-two set up the game nicely for the Chargers who has stuttered to four down for seventy-three in eleven overs.
But the Kings XI Punjab team had the steadier batsmen on the day and that it is what made the difference at the end of the day. Sunny Sohal was the partner in chief in the opening stand of forty-one with Simon Katich in just over four overs. When the duo departed to Rohit Sharma’s feats with the ball yet again, it was time for Yuvraj Singh, the captain, and Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene to stitch useful partnerships among themselves. Jayawardene top scored with forty-three but his dismissal would have caused a few flutters as the Mohali team needed eighteen runs off twelve balls. However, Piyush Chawla and Brett Lee successfully negotiated the final deliveries to hand the Kings XI Punjab and Preity Zinta a win by three wickets over the team that started out well in the opening stages of the league games.
