India would want to repeat the result in Kanpur but not the wrath of the visiting team and the ICC!
The last time India played a Test match in Kanpur, it was in 2008 against South Africa. And the reason why Kanpur has become the cynosure of all eyes is for two reasons: the last Test match finished in less than three days, bringing on the wrath of the visiting team – South Africa, as well as a severe reprimand from the ICC.
What Kanpur did on that occasion was help India square the series for a draw and deny South Africa a chance for taking the series. On all counts, it was a deliberate ploy but India would steer away from preparing a spinner friendly track this time round even though Muttiah Muralitharan has not been in great form and Sri Lanka do have Rangana Herath and Ajantha Mendis up their sleeve.
The Test was reduced to a farce in the end last year and one hopes Green Park has greener dreams for this contest.
Kanpur is also in the spotlight after the lifeless pitch in Ahmedabad failed to enthuse Test enthusiasts and a sporting pitch is what spectators will want in Kanpur to set this series alive.
