The WAGS (Wives and Girlfriends) has not only got to the girls but also, to the mothers of dashing young cricketers.
Mitchell Johnson has a battle on his hands. And it has nothing to do with his performance on the pitch at the Ashes or Lord’s. Johnson mother, Vikki Harber, has alleged that Cricket Australia (CA) had given the WAGS greater precedence by not inviting parents to matches and instead preferring “bitchy girlfriends”.
Harber moaned the loss of communication with her, Australia’s fast bowler, Johnson, who she stated used to at least text message her every once in a while. Now she alleges that Johnson’s girlfriend, Jessica Bratich, who is a karate champion, is coming in the way of her and her son. She even adds that it was Dennis Lillee who prodded Johnson to call his mother during a beach cricket match.
The WAGS culture has been blamed for quite a few tussles within the dressing room, with the most infamous rumours of Adam Gilchrist’s wife having an affair with Michael Slater. Recently Australian vice captain, Michael Clarke, got into a confrontation with Simon Katich for cutting short a bonding moment within the dressing room to be with his model-girlfriend, Lara Bingle, whom he has now proposed to and known to lavishly entertain, with an Aston Martin for Bingle. The WAGS issue was also stated as one of the reasons for Brett Lee’s divorce from Liz Kemp with the pressure of keeping up with the WAGS taking its toll.
Johnson, who recently proposed marriage to Bratich, has declined to comment on his mother’s public grouse.
