After the highs of Lord’s, it was the low of Leeds as Australia hiccuped badly in their first innings at Headingley on the first day of the second Test against Pakistan to leave themselves in a perilous position.
Salman Butt began well as Pakistan captain with the Pakistan fast bowling expectedly making inroads. Such was the exploitation by them of the overcast conditions and moisture that Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain, would have had a nightmare after winning the toss and deciding to bat first.
Mohammad Asif and Mohammed Aamer, with three wickets apiece, tore into the Australian line up before and after lunch to leave Australia tottering, all out for eighty-eight. This was a low moment after winning the first Test by 150 runs. And the difference between the two teams on the day showed itself as Pakistan made a virtual breeze of overhauling Australia’s first innings total with the Australian bowlers not quite having the same effect before reaching 148 for three when bad light ended a rather bad day for Australia.
