If New Zealand fought to bring the match in their favour in the first Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka, they put their best foot forward against the hosts at half time in the second at R. Premadasa Stadium in Sri Lanka.
Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder tore into the Sri Lankan pace line up and notched big runs up front to put the hosts under tremendous pressure. McCullum’s forty-nine from from thirty-five balls included four boundaries and two sixes that showed the emphatic blaster’s abilities.
Ryder’s fifty-two runs from thirty-four balls was in a way overshadowed by McCullum. But it was not less significant in giving the Sri Lankans quite the jitters.
It was the spinners, Ajantha Mendis and Sanath Jayasuriya with one and two wickets, who brought the Sri Lankans back but not near enough for New Zealand to be losing confidence.
Martin Guptill’s thirty-one was also significant as New Zealand went up to 170, although they looked dangerously good to score much more when the opening partnership blazed.
