It is hard to believe this is the same Yuvraj Singh who lost his place in India’s Test team in rather despondent fashion. However, could his resplendent form in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 could perhaps pave the road back into a form may considered beyond hiim?
Yuvraj Singh cut a despondent figure, chased by harsh fans, in Sri Lanka after injury and later form forced Suresh Raina to replace him in the Indian Test team. Criticised prior to it over form and fitness issues, and even allegations of not being fully committed to the Kings XI Punjab in the IPL 3 season following the loss of his captaincy, Yuvraj Singh did not look like he had the support of anyone in the cricket world where it mattered.
However, Yuvraj Singh’s Player of the Tournament award at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 is proof of the fact that Yuvraj Singh has been around the team for ten years to know what is required to stay on top and that he has class to prove it. But that is now limited to the one day version.
It still remains to be seen whether he has convinced those that matter enough to give him another chance to test his mettle in Test cricket. At the moment, it would seem a little hard to break the status quo given that Raina has made a strong debut and even Cheteshwar Pujara has shown his strength in a brief outing against the Australians. However, it does not mean that Yuvraj Singh can kiss his Test career goodbye.
If anything, given his recent form and attitude,Yuvraj Singh may make the Indian squad for India’s tour of West Indies which follows immediately after the IPL 4 season final. Whether he makes the playing eleven remains another matter. But what should keep it interesting is that the team will be looking to make a transitional role of the team which means that with Rahul Dravid, V.V.S. Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar still hanging on strong to Test cricket, that factor may go against an inform Yuvraj Singh trying to make a case for himself.
The temptation though to give Yuvraj Singh, who has become the right hand man in the Indian dressing room to Mahendra Singh Dhoni at the moment, must be a compelling one for the Indian selectors as they will sit next month to pick India’s Test squad for the West Indies.
