This is not how the locals at the Harare Sports Club hoped it would end. But Zimbabwe’s giant killing dream run came to an end, with the Sri Lankan captain scoring a century to win the Zimbabwe ODI Tri series.
Inserted to bat first, Zimbabwe struggled to get off the blocks against a Sri Lankan team that returned to its best resources from the last match. It did not help that the century maker, Brendan Taylor, was sent back early.
It took a consolidation partnership between Tatenda Taibu and Greg Lamb for Zimbabwe to get anywhere near respectability after losing three wickets for forty-nine when Craig Ervine departed as well. Taibu’s seventy-one was the saving grace in the hosts’ 199 as they were bowled out in forty-nine overs, with the efforts of the combination of spinners and fast bowlers.
With a modest target to chase, Zimbabwe’s efforts were made to look paler still as Sri Lanka stormed their ways as their captain returned to form. A century for Dilshan, seventy-two for Upul Tharanga and a huge opening partnership of 160 later, Sri Lanka were wrapping up the final, which they eventually did by the thirty-fifth over with nine wickets to spare to win the Zimbabwe ODI tri series.
